Four decades ago, history was being made when Jean-Marc Natel, Claude-Michel Schönberg, and Alain Boubil created the initial stage screenplay for the now-famous musical, Les Misérables (originally in the French language). Based on Victor Hugo’s late book of the matching name, Les Mis was adapted into a musical performed as a fully lyricized play, which was monumental in that era.

After an initial showing in France, there was already great clamor to produce an English version, and when Cameron Macikintosh discovered the score, he was so inspired and decided to write an English version hand in hand with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who wrote the translated songs. The English staging of Les Misérables only performed with a two-month duration at the Barbican Centre, but due to its astounding success and larger audience with the English version, it rapidly moved to West End’s Palace Theatre in 1985, London theatre's superior theater, and ran for almost 20 years. The musical then relocated one more time to another location, the Queen’s Theatre (which was eventually remade and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in roughly half a decade ago), and continues to run up until today. Counting all its tours since its first showing all those years ago, the stage adaptation of Les Mis is statistically the longest-running stage play in the entire world.

With almost 4 decades in London's West End on its own and not even enumerating its tours in other locations, including its well-received Broadway seasons, it is incontrovertible that Les Misérables perseveres and is breathtaking in the viewpoint of the play's audiences. The storyline and the fully sung-through score, which revolves around justice, passion, and selfless love, always brings each viewer to tears due to the evident heart beneath the surface of each character and act performed. The musical has become so famous that the show has been converted to movies numerous times and has been met with glowing reviews even on a separate platform.

This coming November’s run of Les Mis brings it to Wisconsin, where the show will be running on Saturday 1st November 2025, in Uihlein Hall at Marcus Center For The Performing Arts, Milwaukee. For a sung-through musical like Les Misérables, fans all attest to how Uihlein Hall at Marcus Center For The Performing Arts is the ultimate venue thanks to its audio design and acoustics, in addition to a grand constructed stage to host the play.
