In 1980, a grand idea was conceived when Claude-Michel Schönberg, Alain Boubil, and Jean-Marc Natel wrote the original play script for the now-famous musical, Les Misérables (originally in French). Based on Victor Hugo’s late book of the identical name, the plot of Les Mis was transformed and turned into a musical performed as a show only sung from start to finish, which was a unique approach to stagecraft in that decade.
After a very short run in Paris, there was obviously a growing demand to produce a more accessible adaptation, and when Cameron Macikintosh heard the musical score, he instantly fell in love and announced he was going to create an English adaptation in collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who wrote the translated songs. The English production of the musical initially debuted with a two-month duration at the Barbican Centre, but as a result of its financial success and larger audience with the English version, the show quickly moved to West End’s Palace Theatre in due time, London theatre's top theater, and was performed for almost 20 years. The West End play then relocated once again to another venue, the Queen’s Theatre (which after some time was remade and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in 2019), and continues to run up until today. Adding together all its tours since its first showing four decades ago, Les Mis is statistically the longest-running stage play of all time.
With almost 4 decades in West End on its own and not even enumerating its shows in international cities, especially its well-received Broadway seasons, it is with certainty that this global hit endures and is excellent in the viewpoint of the play's fanbase. The narrative and the epic musical score, which revolves around redemption, sacrifice, and unrequited love, elevates the musical's quality due to the evident heart behind the mask of each character and act presented. Les Mis has become so successful that it has been converted to movies numerous times and received very positively even on a separate platform.
This coming October’s run of Les Mis has it in Wisconsin, where the show will be running on Friday 31st October 2025, in Uihlein Hall at Marcus Center For The Performing Arts, Milwaukee.
